California boasts over 1,000 miles of ocean coastline, 220,000 square miles of ocean waters, thousands of lakes and reservoirs, 29,664 miles of streams and rivers, and 1,800 miles of bay and delta waters. With that amount of water available to fish in, California is an anglers dream.  California has almost every species of game fish available to the avid angler. From crappie to sturgeon and every freshwater fish in between, California has them. And saltwater fish from mackerel to great white sharks can all be found off of the California coast as well.  The bottom line is if you love to fish, California is an anglers paradise. Any type of fishing that you can imagine is available within the state of California.

California Fishing Reports

Clear Lake California Fishing Report

Fishermen out on the lake are finding success using jumbo minnows or nightcrawlers. Try to suspend the crawler beneath a bobber with just enough weight to keep it off the bottom. The bass gently grab the nightcrawler and swim off with it. The trick to catching the bass is to allow it to get the crawler into its mouth before making a sweeping hook set.  Catfish action is still rated fair but it's hard to get a read on the fishing because so few fishermen are out after them. Shag Rock is still producing a few catfish for those using cut bait such as mackerel.

Big Bear Lake California Fishing Report

The best trout bite shifted from mid-day to morning and evening this past week with the top spots still the aerator, Windy Point, Juniper Point and Serrano, and the action is still pretty good for patient anglers. Still mostly just sheet ice on non-windy mornings which is gone by mid-morning. The best bite is in 12 to 18 feet of water with floating baits, mostly Power Bait and Gulp!, on a three-foot leader. Top flavors/colors have been garlic chartreuse, rainbow salmon egg, and chunky cheese garlic.

Lake Casitas California Fishing Report

The trout action has continued to slow with just fair action, mostly on bait. The fish have spread out through the lake and are showing down to 15 feet. The best bite is still on the outside edges of weed lines and off the points. The bass bite has continued to be fair with some decent fish showing in 30 to 40 feet of water in the mornings, and then moving up into the 10 to 15 foot range in the late afternoons. Best bite on plastics worms and nightcrawlers.

Diamond Valley Lake California Fishing Report

The fish are still showing in a mix of shallow to deeper water. There has been fair to good action in seven to 15 feet of water in the backs of the coves on the outside edge of brush on Senkos or trout-like swim bait for bigger fish. The drop-shot or Carolina-rig bite is mostly in 25 to 30 feet of water on small, four-inch brown plastics with green pumpkin and oxblood colors the best. JiggerCraws have been a top bait. The trout bite has been good.

Lake Havasu California Fishing Report

Slow to fair striper action with the bite pretty much confined to the south end of the lake around Havasu Springs and the Bill Williams arm. The stripers are still focusing on the shad with the best bite at the buoy lines. Still some nice quality fish from six to 10 pounds. Most of the action is on Rat-L-Trap or similar lures. Some anglers are trolling umbrella rigs with four baits. The warm weather has improved the largemouth and smallmouth bass action. The fish are showing in water from 12 to 40 feet with many schooled up in wolf packs chasing the shad. Those fish are being caught on shad-like cranks, but the bite can be pretty good during peak activity periods. Redear are getting little pressure, but the best bet is to fish in 20 to 30 feet of water in the bays with nightcrawlers or go up river and fish grassy, sun-warmed backwaters with ‘crawlers under a bobber.

Lake Isabella California Fishing Report

The winter catfish bite is finally start to perk a little with a pretty fair bite at Engineer’s Point on frozen shad. Not a lot of big fish, but pretty numbers on fish around two or three pounds. The trout bite has been slow to fair at the auxiliary dam for bait anglers fishing floating baits, Power Mice, or inflated nightcrawlers. Fly anglers are also reporting a fair to good dry fly bite on midges in most coves in the mornings.

Lake Nacimiento California Fishing Report

The spotted bass bite has continued pretty fair, mostly on small plastics, jigs, and reaction baits.
